AFI clears women’s 4x400m & 4x100m relay teams for Asian Games

  • Women’s 4x400m relay & 4x100m relay cleared; re-trial for men’s 4×400
  • Mayookha Johny & Renjith Maheshwary have asked for one more chance
  • Shotputter Om Prakash Karhana’s participation will depend on Dr’s report

New Delhi, September 16, 2014: The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) announced here today that the women’s relay teams in both 4x100m and 4x400m will be travelling with the rest of the Indian Athletics Team to Incheon for the Asian Games. The athletes will be leaving from New Delhi on September 21, six days before the track and field competition commences.

Earlier, last month, the AFI’s selection committee had selected a 56-member team for the Asiad, based on their performance in the qualification championships, but had asked for a fitness trial to be held for some of the disciplines at NS NIS Patiala on September 15.

The trials were held at Patiala on Monday and the AFI has given clearance to the women’s 4x400m relay team and the 4x100m relay team for the Asian Games. However, the performance of the men’s 4x400m relay team was found to be below par and the selection committee after deliberation with the National chief coach Bahadur Singh and other coaches in the Indian team, has decided to give another chance on September 18 at NIS Patiala on the request of the athletes and coaches.

Shot putter Om Prakash Karhana was another athlete who was asked to take the trial yesterday but he incurred an injury just before his throw event. The AFI is awaiting his medical report and will review his case once the injury level is known. The shot put event at the Asian Games is scheduled to begin from October 2, 2014.

Two of the triple jumpers who were also in the list for trials, Mayookha Johny in the women’s and Renjith Maheshwary in the men’s, did not meet the level expected by the AFI. While Mayookha’s performance was below expectation at the trials held at NS Patiala, Maheshwary’s show at the IAAF Continental Cup in Marakkesh has raised concern. Both athletes have asked for one more chance and they are likely to give the trial on September 18.

The 56-member athletics team was selected on the basis of their performance in the qualification competition, the Federation Cup National Championships in Patiala from August 15-19, 2014. However, in order to ensure that all the athletes were fit and in peak form for the Asiad, the AFI had asked for another trial to be held after a month for the athletes in these events.
