Ranchi bids for Asian Athletics Championships

Indian city Ranchi, the state capital of Jharkhand, is bidding to host the 22nd edition of Asian Athletics Championships in 2017.

The flagship continental event of the Asian Athletics Association (AAA), was first held in Marikina (Philippines) along with the establishment of the Asian body in 1973.  Earlier India hosted this event twice at New Delhi (1989) and Pune (2013).

The sports department of Government of Jharkhand together with Jharkhand Athletics Association, headed by Mr Madukant Pathak, mooted this idea that was immediately got the support of Athletics Federation of India (AFI).

Mr C K Valson, the AFI Secretary, had earlier sent a mail to Mr Pathak asking him if his state is interested in conducting either the 22nd Asian Athletics Championships OR 2nd Asian Youth Athletics Championships.  

The 34th National Games in Ranchi has leaving behind a legacy of huge sports complex which includes a refurbished state-of-the-art Birsa Munda Athletics Stadium, the main venue for track and field athletics.

The magnificent picturesque stadium hosted a number of national athletics competitions in recent time besides the South Asian Junior Athletics Championships in 2013.   With a world class infrastructure and organizational capacity from vast experienced professionals available at their disposal Ranchi is confident of getting the biennial championships.  Mr Pathak already received the bid amount of US Dollars 20,000 in bank draft from Mr Avinash Kumar, I.A.S., Sports Secretary in Government of Jharkhand in this regard and handed over the bid document together with bid amount to the Asian Athletics Association through AFI and is expecting to receive a favourable decision from the Executive Council of AAA sooner.
