A triple Mumbai marathon winner, Lalita switched to steeplechase to do well in major international meets. Much against her Coach's advice, she decided on the new move and at the Asian Games 2014, won a bronze medal (later re-classified to silver after the winner was disqualified) with a national record (9:35:37) breaking Sudha Singh's mark. She broke the national record again while winning the gold in the 3000 m steeplechase at the 2015 Asian championship in Wuhan (9:34.13) and in the process qualified for Rio Games. Lalita went on to shatter the mark again in the 2015 world athletics championship in Beijing while qualifying for the final of the event, something that was the first time in Indian athletics history with the eigth best timing in the heats. Lalita had finished fourth in the heats clocking 9:27.86 min. She however failed to finish in the podium but Rio reward was good enough. In April this year in the Federation Cup championship she tweeked it further to 9:27:09, her personal best and new national record. Determined that she is, Lalita believes she has to be in the 9:15:00 range to be in with a medal hope. That is her goal.
