Jinson earned a berth for Rio with his 1:45.98s effort (the cut off mark was 1:46.00s)in the 800 m in the Indian Grand Prix in Bangalore. This had come after the disappointment in the inter-state championship in Hyderabad where he had the distinction of clocking (1:46.43s) the third fastest time in 800 after Sriram Singh(1:45.77s, 1976) and Pankaj Dimri(1:46.26, 2010) but still missing the Rio mark.

Jinson has been making the headlines with his consistent shows for a year now. At the Asian Grand Prix last year in Thailand, he bagged three back to back gold medals though it was his first leg start-to-finish win provided him the best time of 1:48.52s. Prior to this in the Asian championship in Wuhan he had won a silver.

A Junior commissioned officer, his training in the 800 m started in 2011 under Muhammad Kunji . From thereon he demanded attention in the domestic meets in the national and Federation cup.

In the men’s 800m, Jinson Johnson won the silver medal with a timing of 01:51.35. The 26-year old athlete narrowly missed out on gold, finishing behind Sri Lanka’s Indunil Madusahn who had a time of 01:51.34 in the Third Leg of Asian Grand Prix 2017.
