Indian Race Walking Team to depart tonight for Asian challenge

The nine-member Indian team for Asian 20km Race Walking Championships will depart for Japan tonight. The Indian team coached by Russian coach Alexander Artsybashev will compete in both Men and Women categories of the Asian Championship on March 19th in the Nomi city of Japan.

Last year, India’s Gurmeet Singh created history by becoming the first Indian athlete to clinch a gold medal in the Asian Race Walk Championships at the same venue with the timing of 1 hour 20 minutes and 29 seconds.

The Indian team for this year’s championship was selected last month based on the performances of the athletes at the 4th National Race Walking Championships held in Delhi on February 18, 2017.

The men’s 20km event in Delhi was won by KT Irfanwith a time of 1:22:43.48 seconds. The women’s event was won by Priyanka with a time of 1:37:58.32 seconds.
