New Delhi. The AFI selection committee on Monday selected a 13-member Indian team for the Asian 20km Race Walking Championships to be held at Nomi, Japan on 15th March 2020.

At the meeting held at Delhi under the chairmanship of former Olympian GS Randhawa, the committee also selected an eight-member team for the South Asian Cross Country Championships to be held in Sri Lanka later this year. The competition was earlier scheduled for 15th February 2020 at Nuwara-Eliya but was postponed by Sri Lankan Athletics Federation amid coronavirus concerns. The revised dates of the competition are yet to be announced by the organisers.

For the Asian Race Walking Championships, after detailed deliberations, the Committee selected the athletes considering the performance of the athletes in the recently concluded 7th National/3rd International Open Race Walking Championships 2020 held at Ranchi on 15 and 16 February 2020. The committee also decided to include Irfan KT in the Men 20km event as he has already qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. At Ranchi, Irfan pulled out in the middle of the competition citing muscle cramps.
