LEAP- Athletics Development Project Comes to India

The Indian leg of LEAP- 7 Feb, 2017 Leadership and Excellence in Athletics Programme was launched in India by Athletics Federation of India (AFI) at Delhi Tamil Education Association (LTEA) Senior Secondary School on Monday, 6 February 2017.

Designed and developed by UK Athletics and UK Sport, with the endorsement from the IAAF’s Athletics for a Better World programme, LEAP is a project linked with IAAF World Championships London 2017. The aim of the project is to develop youth athletics in a number of countries around the world and introduce young people to athletics, develop their basic running, jumping and throwing abilities, and create a long-term passion for the sport.

A team of experts from UK Athletics including trainers Phil Amos and Andy Neal are training 15 selected participants from various schools of Delhi at LTEA. The other visiting officials for the 5-day tutor’s programme being held in India are Wilbert Greaves and Nigel Hutchings.

According to Stuart Attwell, Major Events Development Manager British Athletics, the purpose of the training course is to train 12 PE teachers or athletics coaches as LEAP 2017 Tutors. Once qualified, they will be asked to train young people (aged 14-18) as Young Athletics Leaders. These young people will then be asked to organise athletics activities (Kids Athletics etc), for young children in schools and the community.

Apart from India, the LEAP programme has already been introduced to different IAAF Member Federation countries such as Uganda, Chile, Azerbaijan, Mozambique and Senegal.
