Odisha’s promising sprinter Animesh Kujur etched his name in the record books, while international middle distance runner KM Chanda suffered defeat at the hands of Maharashtra’s Yamuna Ladkat in the women’s 800m on the penultimate day of the 62nd National Open Athletics Championships.
On his way to winning the gold medal the 20 years old Kujur clocked 20.74 seconds which was better than the previous meet record of 20.75 seconds set by Assam’s Amlan Borgohain in 2021.
Asian Games bronze medalist Vithya Ramaj withdrew from the medal round of the women’s 400m hurdles. In Vithya’s absence, Sinchal ensured the gold medal went to the Railways. She clocked 57.88 seconds. Punjab’s Veerpal Kaur denied Railways team 1-2 as she crossed the finish line ahead of Nanhi (Railways) to win silver with a time of 58.69 secs. Nanhi won bronze with a time of 59.60 secs.
In the women’s 800m, Maharashtra’s Yamuna won gold with a time of 2:01.95 secs, while KM Chanda of Railways settled for silver 2:02.66 secs. Ashakiran Barla of Jharkhand won bronze with a time of 2:03.01 secs.
