Vidhi and Deepika light up fourth day’s competition with U18 National Records

Guwahati, November 14: Vidhi (Uttar Pradesh) and Deepika (Haryana) went into unchartered territory with new girls’ Under-18 National Records in Shot Put and Javelin Throw respectively on the fourth day of competition in the 37th AFI National Junior Athletics Championships at the Athletics Stadium in the SAI Regional Centre here today.

Vidhi, who will turn 18 next month, became the first Indian U18 Shot Putter to breach the 16m mark with her second try over 16.18m. It improved on the U18 National Record set at 15.99m by Kachnar Chaudhary in Coimbatore in 2016. Vidhi followed that up with two more efforts over 16m, marking 16.56m on her fourth attempt as the new benchmark in the age-group.

Deepika, who won the Asian U18 Javelin Throw silver medal in Kuwait a month ago, improved her own U18 National record from 51.84m set in the National U18 Championships in Bhopal in September to 52.75m on her second try today. She pushed herself to throw further on her next two attempts, punching turf at 53.17m and 53.36m to confirm her evolution as a thrower.

Sanjay Vishnoi (Rajasthan) joined the ranks of the record breakers when winning a sensational boys’ under-16 Javelin Throw competition. On a day when as many as five throwers breached the 60m, Sanjay Vishnoi’s fifth attempt of 62.47 was not only a winning throw but also brought him the record from Bihar’s Virender Yadav who had opened with 62.16m.
