Services, Railways shine on the opening day of National Open Athletics

Chennai: Day 1 at the 57th National Open Athletics Championships at Chennai’s JLN Stadium saw finals of men’s and women’s 5000m, women’s long jump, high jump and hammer throw, and men’s shot put, apart from the rounds leading up to the finals in other events to be held in the next three days.

Railways’ L. Surya clinched the gold in women’s 5000m, with a timing of 16:02.85, leaving behind her competitors by a good margin. Chinta Yadav of the Railways (16:40.45 min) and Sangeeta Naik from All India Police Services (16:53.97 min) won the silver and the bronze, respectively.

Services’ G Lakshmanan (14:04.21) went over Railways’ Abhishek Pal (14:08.38, silver) and Services’ colleague Mann Singh (14:08.87, bronze) to win the gold in men’s 5000m. Lakshmanan grabbed the gold, in 3000m, at the recently concluded 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.

With a distance of 6.35m, Railways’ Neena V. secured the gold in women’s long jump, as Jharkhand’s Priyanka Kirketta (6.22m) and Karnataka’s D Aishwarya (6.16m) finished second and third, respectively.

In women’s hammer throw, the gold and silver went to Railways’ Sarita P Singh (60.54m) and Gunjan Singh (59.10m), respectively, and Haryana’s Jyoti took home the bronze medal (57.07m).

Services’ Tejinder Pal Toor, who won a silver for India at Ashgabat 2017, ended with a gold in men’s shot put with a distance of 18.86m. ONGC’s Om Prakash Singh (18.80m) won silver, and Railways’ Jasdeep Singh (18.51m) won bronze.

In women’s high jump final, Kerala’s Jinu Maria Manuel (1.78m) and Angel P Devasia (1.76m) bagged the gold and silver medals, respectively, while Sonu (1.76m) representing Railways settled for the bronze.

Day 2 would see finals happening in men’s long jump, women’s shot put, 100m, 400m, and 1500m for both men and women.
