Stage set for 52nd National Cross Country Championships in Goa

13 January 2018,Goa : After an action filled year of 2017, the 2018 athletics season will open at Ponda in Goa on Sunday with the 52nd National Cross Country Championships.

More than 600 athletes from various state units of Athletics Federation of India (AFI) have registered for this one-day event.

The competition will kick-off at 7am on Sunday with 10km men’s race followed by women’s 10km event at 7.45am. The morning session will also witness boy’s U20 8km (8.45am), girl’s U20 6km (9.30am) and boy’s U18 6am (10.15am). There will be three events in the evening session- girl’s U18 4km (3.30pm), boy’s U16 2km (4.00pm) and girl’s U16 2km (4.30pm) followed by medal ceremony.

Host Goa Athletics Association (GAA) has made all necessary arrangements for the competition which will be conducted at the 2km circuit at the Farmagudi Engineering College ground.

Besides various state units of AFI, sports boards such as Railways, All India Police & Services are also taking part in the competition.

“GAA has made best arrangements for athletes and officials who are coming from different parts of the country for this competition. In past we have successfully organised many athletics events in Goa and we thank AFI for showing confidence in us and giving this meet to Goa. I wish every one a pleasant stay in Goa and we hope to see good competition on Sunday,” commented Paresh Kamat, Secretary GAA.

The Goa-meet will also serve as the qualifiers for the 14th Asian Cross Country Championships to be held at Guiyang, China on 15th March 2018. The Indian team will be selected based on performances of athletes at the 52nd National Cross Country Championships.
